John Williamson's Camping Memories

In Episode 1 of Caravan and Camping with the Stars, Australian music icon John Williamson looks back on the camping trips that shaped his childhood.

Growing up as one of five brothers on a wheat farm, his family's two weeks off after harvest were spent at Lakes Entrance in Victoria, towing a simple trailer behind an old Ford Customline. John shares memories of learning to fish, losing his first reel to the water, and later taking his own children back to the family property each Christmas to camp and fish for cod on the McEntire River.

He reflects on camping as a great equaliser, a tradition stretching back to the beginnings of humanity, where a campfire turns any stop along the road into home. John also talks about a recent trip to Ethabuka Station in the Simpson Desert in his solar-rigged Toyota, and touches on his new album, Butcher Bird, inspired by his love of birds and reflections on life outside the music industry.
