3 reminders to keep children safe while camping

Caravan Industry Association of Australia1 min read

Camping and caravanning with children can be quite different to camping as a couple or group of adults. It can be just as much fun, but there are a few added precautions to keep the whole family out of trouble. Here are three reminders to keep children safe while camping.

1. Water safety

Most Australian children can swim from a young age, but it is very important to teach your children to never go into water without an adult present. Pool safety matters for children of all ages, so review the rules with them whenever you arrive somewhere new.

2. Wear a helmet

This one is fairly obvious, but help protect your child’s head. A helmet is a must for bikes and scooters around the park, and if they are a bit older and doing more intense activities such as mountain biking, consider investing in a tougher helmet.

3. Make them check in

As soon as your children are old enough to head off with their siblings or in a group, make sure they check in regularly. Agree on how often and where, so they can enjoy their freedom while you always know roughly where they are.

Although everyone at the caravan park should be watching out for them, it is your responsibility to teach your children good habits that lessen the risk — and a quick refresher at the start of each trip goes a long way.
